Burning eyes: causes and what lies behind them
Symptoms8 September 20265 min read
Burning eyes are non-specific: they can point to tear-film instability, lid-margin inflammation, allergy or simple visual overload. Telling these apart determines the treatment.

The most frequent triggers
Dry eye disease leads the list, particularly meibomian gland dysfunction with rapid tear-film evaporation. Blepharitis, allergies, irritation from cosmetics or preservatives, and a reduced blink rate at screens are also common.
Medication such as antihistamines, diuretics, beta blockers or isotretinoin, hormonal change and autoimmune conditions can likewise affect the ocular surface.
When burning needs a specialist opinion
Arrange an eye examination if burning lasts longer than two to three weeks, if redness, light sensitivity, discharge or lid swelling develop, or if your vision changes.
Severe pain, sudden loss of vision or any injury require immediate assessment.
What the examination involves
After discussing symptoms, daily routine and medication, we examine lid margins and conjunctiva at the slit lamp, assess the cornea with staining, and take objective measurements of the tear film and meibomian glands.
This distinguishes evaporative dry eye, reduced tear production, allergic reaction and lid-margin inflammation – mixed forms are frequent.
Treatment pathways
Depending on findings, options include lid hygiene and warming, preservative-free tear substitutes, anti-inflammatory measures, workplace adjustments or, where suitable, light-based treatment.
Follow-up matters: only comparing measurements over time shows whether the chosen measures are working.
